Program Resident

Bio:

Dr. Calvillo is a third-year resident and the first physician in his family. His parents emigrated from Mexico and, having grown up in a monolingual Spanish home, he has experienced how intimidating the mixing of a minority culture can feel. Dr. Calvillo has seen first-hand the impact of culturally competent, language-concordant care with his family and the individuals he has worked with throughout the years in free clinics.

He has served the predominately underserved and predominately Latino patients of the community through the student-run Clínica Tepati at UC Davis and Clínica Martín-Baró at UCSF in California. These experiences have broadened his understanding of different barriers to care that patients face, as well as different perspectives of the healthcare system that sometimes cause people to avoid it altogether.

Dr. Calvillo knows that his upbringing is only one perspective and that by being a part of this program, he will further learn more perspectives from his peers and the people he meets and incorporate them into his practice to best provide the care the community needs. As his grandpa always said, “¡Sigue adelante y échale ganas!”
